Katmai Coast Wildlife Photography Workshop With Carl Johnson 2017-05-01T09:51:30+00:00

Katmai Coast Wildlife Alaska Photo Workshop with Carl Johnson | July 12-16, 2017

Venture to the coast of Kukak Bay in Katmai National Park & Preserve, to see and photograph wildlife backed by pristine scenes. Your base camp for this workshop will be the Katmai Wilderness Lodge, a picturesque, private property situated on the west coast of Kodiak Island. This secluded lodged hosts a maximum of twelve guests, and lucky visitors receive exclusive and intimate bear and wildlife viewing opportunities for an authentic Alaska adventure.

Day One

Plan to arrive in Kodiak, Alaska, by June 11 in order to ensure your connecting flight to the Lodge. You will depart Kodiak on Andrew Airways at approximately 12:30pm, and will need to check in at least an hour prior to your departure. Contact Andrew Airways at (907) 487-2566 to arrange for your complimentary shuttle to the Andrew Airways float plane base. Your guide, Carl Johnson, will meet you at Andrew Airways. The flight to Katmai Wilderness Lodge is approximately one hour and traverses some spectacular island and coastal scenery within the Kodiak Archipelago, so have your camera ready for aerial photography when you board the plane!

Day Two through Five

On a daily basis, you will depart the lodge on landing craft boats (vessels specially designed to offload guests on the beaches by a bow ramp) to explore different beaches within the bay and photograph bears on land. There will be opportunity to capture bears digging for clams, fishing, and eating sedge grasses in the tidal zones. You will also cruise to seal rookeries and photograph seals as they sun themselves upon the rocks. There will also be opportunity to photograph sea otters, sea lions, and sea birds of many varieties. Since the lodge is located on the coast, wildlife sightings include both land and marine wildlife.

For a typical day, you will head out by boat after breakfast to photograph wildlife throughout the morning; returning to the lodge for lunch. Following lunch, you will spend the afternoon afield until dinner. After dinner in the main lodge, you will have an evening classroom session to discuss composition and technique, as well as conduct an image review. On the last day, you will have one more opportunity for a few more hours in the field before catching the flight back to Kodiak.

Lodging consists of seven guest cabin rooms, all with private baths (hot showers/flush toilets). There is a multi-level deck where you can relax after a day in the field to take in the scenery, oftentimes viewing wildlife from the lodge itself. You are also welcome to stroll the beach and do some beachcoming to discover what treasures the outgoing tide leaves behind. The highly skilled and professional lodge staff ensures everyone’s enjoyment and safety while visiting Katmai Wilderness Lodge.

Whenever possible we endeavor to follow our itineraries as written. However, trips will occasionally deviate from the written itinerary due to weather conditions, group preference, specific safety considerations, or unforeseeable circumstances (collectively what some have called “The Alaska Factor.”) Therefore, we suggest that you approach any Alaska trip with an open mind and an adventurous spirit.
