Treasures of the Southeast Photo Expedition with Carl Johnson

August 10-14, 2023 | $4150.00 per person

Join us to the heart of the Tongass National Forest to photograph glaciers and coastal landscapes, black bears and whales on this Southeast photo expedition. Through four nights and five days, you will see the incredible diversity of wildlife and scenic photography opportunities available in this stunning part of the 49th state. Staying in Wrangell, Alaska, we will venture out daily by boat with Alaska Charters & Adventures to explore three stunning aspects of the region.

Arrival Day

You should arrive in Wrangell, Alaska, no later than 5:00 p.m. Let us know your itinerary so we can arrange for transportation from the airport to your hotel. After checking in to your accommodations at the Stikine Inn, we will have a welcome dinner with our hosts, John and Brenda.

Day Two-Four

For the next three days, we will head out to explore the three following aspects of the stunning coastal landscape near Wrangell. The order of activity will depend on a variety of factors. We will grab breakfast each day at the Sweet Tides Bakery, enjoy lunch on the boat, and then have a group dinner back at the Stikine Inn. We will also explore the community of Wrangell to capture images of this coastal community. We will also conduct a daily photo review session. Hands-on instruction will also be provided daily as needed.

● LaConte Glacier

After breakfast, we join up with our guides at the public boat dock and head out to explore either the LeConte Glacier. We head out for 8-9 hours, cruising across the delta of the Stikine River to watch for birds and enjoy the coastal landscape. We will then enter the fjord were the LeConte Glacier is located, enjoying the majesty of the glacier and looking for resting harbor seals. After the glacier, we will explore the small coastal town of Petersburg, known as Alaska’s “Little Norway.”

● Anan Creek

After breakfast, we join our boat guide and head around the back side of Wrangell Island to spend the day at the Anan Creek and the Anan Wildlife Observatory Site in the Tongass National Forest. We take a short hike from our boat landing site through dense temperate rainforest to arrive at the observatory where we will spend the day photographing black bears, brown bears, eagles, and ravens that all gather to feed on the abundant salmon in the creek. Time will be spent between the open elevated platform and the covered blind down at creek level.

● Whale Watching

After breakfast, we join our boat guide and head out for a day on the water. Our primary mission is to look for pods of humpback whales in an area where they are known to engage in the behavior referred to as bubble net feeding. We will also look for other marine wildlife and marine birds throughout the day. Lunch is on the boat.

Day Five

After a joint breakfast, we will take a final walk around the vicinity of our hotel for those who are interested. This will be your time to enjoy one last look at this classic Southeast Alaska coastal community.
