Yukon & Brooks Range Winter Photo Workshop

OVERVIEW

Explore the mystical wonders of winter in Alaska with this new photography workshop! This itinerary includes two nights near the Yukon River photographing the snowy forest and four nights in Wiseman to explore the dramatic mountain landscapes of the central Brooks Range. The emphasis of this workshop will be evening light and aurora borealis photography.

Arrive at Fairbanks, Alaska, no later than 5:00 p.m. Take the complimentary hotel shuttle to the Pike’s Waterfront Lodge. Meet in the lobby at 7:00 p.m. for our first group dinner. Conditions permitting, we will head out for our first aurora photography after dinner.

Following breakfast, we will drive north to the Yukon River and check in to our rooms at the Yukon River Camp. Lodging there is rustic with shared rooms and shared bathroom facilities. After checking in, we will head out to photograph the snowy trees evening light, dusk, and twilight. Sunset is 6:17 p.m. The trees are only ten miles from camp. We will return to camp for dinner, then head out again to photograph the northern lights with the trees. Astronomical twilight begins at 8:08 p.m.

Breakfast at 9:30 a.m., then we head back out on the Dalton Highway toward Wiseman. Along the way, we will make several photo stops, including the Arctic Circle sign, Finger Mountain, and Gobbler’s Knob. We should arrive in Wiseman at around 3:00 p.m. We will drop gear in our cabins at the Arctic Getaway Bed & Breakfast, then head out to shoot evening light. Sunset is at 6:15 p.m. We will return to our cabins for dinner, then back out again to photograph the northern lights.

Our routine for our three full days in Wiseman will vary depending on the conditions.

If we were out late chasing the aurora, we will have a late breakfast. If conditions are clear and sunny, we will make lunch for the road and head out to photograph. We will stay in the field until sunset, then return to the cabins for dinner. We will head out again for desert in the field and a bonfire while we wait for the aurora borealis. We will explore various locations in the Dalton Highway between Wiseman and Galbraith Lake. One one day, we will have dinner in the field at Galbraith Lake after sunset.

During cloudy periods, we will vary our routine. On cloudy nights, we will stay in the lodge after dinner for an evening classroom session. During the daytime if it is cloudy, we will have additional classroom sessions and enjoy a guided walking tour of Wiseman. Classroom sessions will include presentations, editing, and photo review.

We will depart Wiseman no later than 10:oo a.m. to return south on the Dalton Highway. Upon arrival at Yukon River Camp, we will check into our rooms and have lunch. We will return again to the frosty forest for evening and twilight photography. We return to the Camp for dinner, then head back out again to photograph the northern lights with the trees.

We have breakfast and hit the road by 10:00 a.m. to return to Fairbanks, which is about a 3-hour drive. We will enjoy a final meal as a group for lunch upon our return.

Whenever possible we endeavor to follow our itineraries as written. However, trips will occasionally deviate from the written itinerary due to weather conditions, group preference, specific safety considerations, or unforeseeable circumstances (collectively what some have called “The Alaska Factor.”) Therefore, we suggest that you approach any Alaska trip with an open mind and an adventurous spirit.
